GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR THIS LATE EDITION OF EYEWITNESS NEWS....
I'M LEAH JOHNSON...
FRANK MALLOY HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

ON SUNDAY.. A MACON CHURCH WILL JOIN A NATIONAL OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FOR FLORIDA TEENAGER TRAYVON MARTIN.
MARTIN WAS GUNNED DOWN A MONTH AGO BY GEORGE ZIMMERMAN... A LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH CAPTAIN.
NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED IN THE CASE.

GREATER TABERNACLE CHURCH IS INVITING EVERYONE TO WEAR HOODIES TO SUNDAY'S 11 A-M WORSHIP SERVICE.

FRIDAY NIGHT... THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN PHILADELPHIA MARCHED TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR MARTIN AND HIS FAMILY.
MANY OF THEM WORE HOODIES TO HONOR THE TEEN WHO WAS WEARING ONE WHEN HE WAS SHOT.
POLICE SAY THE MARCH STARTED WITH AROUND 25 HUNDRED PEOPLE BUT GREW AS THEY MADE THEIR WAY DOWNTOWN.
FINAL CROWD ESTIMATES RANGED FROM 5 TO 8 THOUSAND.
GROUPS IN MIAMI AND NEW YORK ALSO MARCHED TO SHOW SUPPORT ON FRIDAY.

CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS PLAN TO HAVE A MARCH OF THEIR OWN THROUGH DOWTOWN ATLANTA ON MONDAY.
OFFICIALS SAY THE EVENT IS AIMED AT CHANGING OR GETTING RID OF GEORGIA'S "STAND YOUR GROUND" LAW.... WHICH IS SIMILAR TO THE LAW INVOLVED IN THE FLORIDA CASE.
DEFENSE ATTORNEY KELLY BURKE JOINED US ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX TO EXPLAIN.

"your home, it used to be in the georgia that you had to retreat away from an intruder but in 2006 the legislature said no that doesn't make any sense. We're going to allow you to stand your ground in your home. Your home is your caslte you can defend your home and you can defend everybody who's inside your home and that make perfect sense.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SPOKE OUT ABOUT THE SHOOTING ON FRIDAY.. SAYING HIS THROUGHTS ARE WITH TRAYVON'S FAMILY.

"But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon. You know, if I had a son he'd look like Trayvon. I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americas are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we will get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

THE PRESIDENT WENT ON TO SAY.... THAT HE WAS LIMITED IN COMMENTING ON THE CASE BECAUSE OF THE FEDERAL INVESTIGATION... BUT CALLED THE SITUATION "A TRAGEDY."
ZIMMERMAN CLAIMS HE SHOT MARTIN IN SELF-DEFENSE.
POLICE SAY THERE'S NO EVIDENCE TO DISPROVE HIS STORY.
THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AND F-B-I HAVE OPENED A CIVIL RIGHTS INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATH OF THE 17-YEAR-OLD.

KEEP WARNER ROBINS BEAUTIFUL HOPES WHEN YOU CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS... YOU CONSIDER DONATING A PAIR OF NEW OR GENTLY WORN SHOES.

AUSTIN LEWIS TALKED TO ORGANIZERS ABOUT THE EFFORT TO HELP A LOCAL CHARITY.

<<
KEEP WARNER ROBINS BEAUTIFUL CHAIRMAN REGINA PALLADENO AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEBRA JONES ARE DOING A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SPRING CLEANING....
SORTING THROUGH PAIRS OF SHOES.
Debra Jones, Exec. Dir. Keep Warner Robins Beautiful: It's such a simple need, but it's so important regardless of where you live, whether you are in humid dry areas or cold wet areas you have got to have the proper footwear.
THAT'S WHY THEY'RE HOPING PEOPLE IN CENTRAL GEORGIA WILL FILL THESE BOXES AT HAPPY HOUR RECYCLING WITH NEW OR GENTLY WORN SHOES.
Debra Jones, Exec. Dir. Keep Warner Robins Beautiful: It absolutely breaks your heart when you see people that don't have proper footwear. You see people wearing one shoe and being barefoot on the other foot, or you see mix matched shoes
Austin Lewis, Eyewitness News: Now according to Soles for Souls, that's the organization that's working with Keep Warner Robins Beautiful on this shoe drive, one pair of shoes can not only send a child to school, but it can also keep a child healthy.
Debra Jones, Exec. Dir. Keep Warner Robins Beautiful: Infection, insects, anything you might step on or step in, your shoes will protect.
THESE SHOES WON'T JUST STAY IN CENTRAL GEORIGA.... THEY COULD SEE OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
Regina Palladeno, Keep Warner Robins Beautiful Chairman: we're just going to where the need is. It can go anywhere, it can go all over the world, it can stay here locally and that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to help people who need the need.
THEY'RE HOPING THAT FOLKS WILL FIND IT IN THEIR HEARTS.. TO LET OTHERS WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES

A McDONOUGH MAN WHO ADMITTED TO ACCIDENTALLY KILLING A STATE WILDLIFE OFFICER TWO YEARS AGO... WILL SERVE FIVE YEARS IN PRISON.
NORMAN HALE PLEADED GUILTY LAST YEAR TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER... AND HINDERING COMMUNICATION WITH A LAW OFFICER.
PROSECUTORS SAY HE SHOT OFFICER CHRISTOPHER UPTON IN MARCH 2010 IN JASPER COUNTY WHILE HUNTING.
HE THEN WAITED SEVERAL HOURS TO NOTIFY AUTHORITIES.
HALE SAID HE THOUGHT HE HAD SHOT A COYOTE.
U.S. ATTORNEY MICHAEL MOORE SAID UPTON COULD HAVE SURVIVED IF HALE AND HIS FRIENDS APPLIED QUOTE "BASIC FIRST AID."

Instead of just treating some body as a human being and showing that... that amount of compassion and going up to offering to help somebody in distress or to be there. If they just knelt down and said 'look, it's gonna be ok.' That's really the tragedy in this case.

PROSECUTORS ALSO SAID HE FAILED TO TELL POLICE THERE WERE SEVERAL WITNESSES TO THE SHOOTING.
